The course can be considered a bridge course to prepare students for university education. The admission to this course is based on marks obtained in SSLC or standard 10.
Generally three streams of studies are followed, Art, Commerce and Science. Students desiring to study professional courses in Karnataka must pass this exam in science stream and also qualify in Common Entrance Test conducted by CET cell of government of Karnataka. This is required to get admission (merit seats) in colleges offering professional courses like medicine,engineering,dentistry,nursing and pharmacy.Recently, the Karnatka PUC Board attempted to make the First year PUC exams public in an attempt to filter out bad students and improve overall score. (As only about 40% of students pass the exam, 60% of students who write the exam fail, and only about 1.5% get above 85 as their overall percentage).
