IPL: Chennai Super Kings Win An Important Match Against Kolkata Knight Riders

In a must-win match, Chennai Super Kings showed why they are the multiple winners of the IPL, with a last ball victory. With five needed off the last ball, Dwayne Bravo hit a teasing six off Rajat Bhatia to keep Chennai's hopes of qualification alive.
KKR who batted first looked keen on putting CSK out of the competition. Gambhir and McCullum inflicted maximum damage with a partnership of 99 in 11.3 overs. Both of them followed in quick succession, which led to the momentum getting arrested. The former making 62 and the latter 37. Their dismissals was just the opening CSK needed as they strangled the rest of the batsmen. Only some fine hitting from Debabrata Das late in the innings could get the score to respectable proportions.
CSK's innings began just the way KKR's had. Hussey and Vijay flayed the bowlers to all parts of the ground and the game seemed to be headed for an early finish. That changed when Sunil Narine got both of them in one over. The innings stuttered further with Raina's run out. A seemingly easy chase became tougher by the over as KKR tightened the noose, once again through Bhatia and Narine. However, Dhoni pummelled Marchant De Lange for a six and two fours in the penultimate over to bring it to 9 off the last over. Bhatia bowled an excellent first five deliveries, one of which accounted for Dhoni. With five needed off one delivery, he bowled the worst possible ball that anyone could, and Bravo hit a towering six, which just managed to clear the long on boundary. That six reignited Chennai's campaign, and the defending champs look set to repeat what they have been doing in all the editions -- Rising from the Ashes.

As far as the celebrations go, Raj said: "For now, we will first go home when the doctors discharge Shilpa. She will rest first and then we will decide."

Ashok Leyland reports poor quarterly and annual results, ropes in MS Dhoni as brand ambassador

The commercial vehicle manufacturer has roped in cricket superstar Mahendra Singh Dhoni as its brand ambassador while it reports poor quarterly results

Ashok Leyland, the Hinduja group company and commercial vehicle major, has reported a weak March 2012 quarter, with its net profit declining over 13%, year-on-year to Rs258.73 crore, on the back of increased cost of materials which was dearer by 19% for the same time period. Net sales managed to increase only 11% to Rs4,235.82 crore. The company has reported a 16.13% increase in net sales for the year ended 31 March 2012, mostly aided by slightly higher sales realisations. It sold 1,02,009 vehicles during the same time period, an increase of 8.4%, which is less than the average increase of 10% over the last three years. However, its annual net profits were poor, which declined by over 10%, year-on-year, to Rs566.97 crore.

Despite the poor results, it has, for the first time, roped in a celebrity endorsement-none other than star cricketer MS Dhoni. The company hopes this move will give it a much-needed facelift and a boost in its sales, going forward. We do not know whether a celebrity endorser will work well for a segment such as commercial vehicles, since the buyer is usually a corporate and not an individual. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether corporates can identify with the MS Dhoni brand.

According to the company's press release, managing director Vinod K Dasari said, "Mahi's (MS Dhoni) choice was almost automatic for I cannot think of another person befitting the values of Brand Ashok Leyland so well. A true son-of-the-soil, a leader who is focused, straight-thinking, passionate and, most of all, humble, he will lead the numerous initiatives that are on the anvil." He further added, "We believe that all these efforts will help enhance customer profitability to a new level."

Much of its business remains cyclical, which means truckers buy in good times and remain passive during economic hardships. This means the company becomes vulnerable to economic cycles. Most of the trucks are financed by vehicle loans which are linked to interest rates. In a high interest rate regime, vehicle sales get affected and Ashok Leyland was no exception as its sales grew only 11% which was less that the pace of increase in expenses which grew 19%.  Therefore it has been trying to target newer segments, such as defence and exports.

To tackle uneven economic cycles, Ashok Leyland has started a slew of initiatives and new product innovations to aggressively gain market share and become one of the strongest players in the commercial vehicle business.

The company unveiled DOST, which marked its entry into the robustly growing LCV (light commercial vehicle) market in joint venture with Nissan Motor Company. With a payload capacity of 1.25 tonnes, DOST enters the small commercial vehicle (SCV) market which is witnessing a perceptible upward shift in terms of features, performance and payload.

The defence segment, which has seen increased spend over the years, is another target segment for the company. For this, it has launched the Super Stallion, an 8x8 High Mobility Vehicle (HMV), and with that, the expansion of its range of logistics vehicles catered towards the defence sector. It is also aiming to export more vehicles abroad.

It hopes that its share of non-cyclical revenue will be 50% over the next few years.

Last year, it had announced bonus shares for its shareholders. Free shares were given to shareholders for each single one held, thus doubling its share capital to Rs26.607 crore.

Petrol price hiked by Rs.6.28 plus taxes, industry welcomes move (Second Lead)

India's state-controlled refiners hiked prices petrol by a steep 6.28 per litre, exclusive of taxes, effective midnight Wednesday to compensate losses incurred by them for selling the fuel at subsidised rates. The hike will be between Rs.7.54 and Rs.7.98 in the four metros and would be higher or lower in other cities depending on the extent of taxes levied by the concerned state.
The otherwise economically sound move by the government to offset a spiralling import bill at a time when the rupee has depreciated to a record low of Rs.56.19 against the dollar, however, raised the heckles of the country's growing middle class which has been particularly vocal against the hike, as they are the most affected by higher petrol costs.
It also drew flak from the government's allies and the opposition, alike who demanded a rollback.
India Inc. welcomed the government's move, saying the increase had become inevitable with the continued slide of the rupee’s exchange rate.
"The inflationary impact of such an increase is once and for all and therefore transitory. It can be mitigated by reduction in taxes both by the central and state governments," the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry said.
"Given the losses being incurred, the Company is compelled to increase the price of petrol by Rs.6.28 per litre (excluding VAT/Sales Tax) with effect from midnight," the country's largest oil firm, Indian Oil Company, said in a statement.

"This excludes losses already suffered till date during current financial year 2012-13, which would require an additional increase of around Rs. 1.50 per litre in selling price of motor spirit (MS) for balance part of the year," Indian Oil said.
Petrol in Delhi will cost Rs.73.18 a litre, in Mumbai Rs.78.57 a litre, in Kolkata Rs.77.88 and in Chennai Rs.77.53 per litre.
The states levy sales tax of between 15 percent and 33 percent. Among the other levies are VAT and additional sales tax.
India deregulated petrol prices in June 2010 but continues to subsidise kerosene, diesel and cooking gas to protect the poor from the impact of inflationary pressures.
Petrol prices were last revised on Nov 4, 2011.
The oil companies have been losing Rs.8,000 crore per annum as they were being forced to sell petrol at subsidised rates.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister S. Jaipal Reddy had said Tuesday the depreciation of the rupee had necessitated an immediate increase in fuel prices.

SSC results put off by a day

SSC students who have been eagerly waiting for their results will have to wait for one more day to know their fate. The directorate of government examinations will now release the results only on Thursday, instead of Wednesday.

A day before the scheduled date for announcing the results, the directorate postponed it by one day as minister for secondary education K Parthasarathi will be back in the city only on Thursday from his bypoll campaign in Tirupati.

This is the second time that the directorate had to postpone the results to suit the minister's schedule. Though the initial plan was to release the results at 11 am on Wednesday the officials had to postpone it to 4.30 pm the same day as the minister was to attend a party meeting.

The decision was taken at a short notice. This sudden postponement has heightened tension among students who are apprehensive as to how the CBSE model grading system, which was recently introduced in SSC, would affect them.

As per the new grading system, instead of marks, just grading (on a scale of 10) will be given in SSC certificates of the students. The directorate officials, however, said that it was the minister's busy schedule that forced them to postpone the results.

"We had slated the function at 4.30 pm and this seemed not convenient time for students to access the internet for the results. Hence, we decided to defer the timing and postpone it by a day," said B Manmadha Reddy, director, government examinations.

The decision incensed several students and parents.
